Tips for Protecting Your Company’s Data

The data stored by a company includes information about employees, clients, and other confidential data that should never be shared publicly. Companies are responsible for securing all of their data to prevent leaks, hacks, and employees from sharing it willingly with competitors. Here are some tips for protecting your company’s data.

Restrict Access

One of the best ways to protect the company’s data is to restrict access. Find out which employees need to access the data and limit it to them. If they leave the company, revoke their access immediately. The minute they walk out the door on their last day of work is when you should revoke their access to the data.

Train Security Safety

Be sure to train your employees in security safety if they have access to the company’s data. This includes teaching them about phishing scams and other problems that can cause data to be stolen. Also train your employees to use strong passwords and put measures in place that require those types of passwords at all times.

Limit Vendors with Access

There are some instances where companies will need to provide vendors with access to data. If this is the case for your company be sure to limit vendors who have access and how much access they have. Before granting access you should look into the security the vendor has in place, how the data will be returned should the relationship end, and if unauthorized access occurs to the data how the vendor will handle it.

Sign NDAs

You should have all of your employees sign non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) when they are hired. An NDA prevents employees from sharing trade secrets of your company, including data. Make sure these NDAs are updated every year so the employees remember the rules protecting implied volatility and other data.
